Roof fasteners look like a commodity line until a screw pulls out in a cyclone-rated zone, a washer splits on a Klip-Lok® rib, or the certifier asks why the roof has bright zinc screws on a Monument® sheet. On commercial COLORBOND® projects, fastener specification is part of the warranty system — BlueScope and profile manufacturers publish requirements that installers and suppliers must follow.

Why fasteners are not generic
Each roof screw must:
- Penetrate the purlin with adequate thread engagement after washer compression
- Drill and tap the sheet and purlin steel thickness without burning out
- Seal at the washer without crushing the COLORBOND® coating
- Resist wind uplift per AS/NZS 1170 for the building importance level and region
A 12g screw that works on 0.42 BMT purlins may be marginal on thin top-hat sections. A screw too long punches through bottom flanges; too short strips in high wind.
Screw length selection
Calculate from:
- Profile rib height at fixing point
- Washer and seal thickness
- Purlin or batten thickness
- Required thread engagement (typically manufacturer-specified minimum)
On concealed-fix profiles, clip systems replace some penetrations — but perimeter, ridge and accessory fixings still need correct screws. Never assume the same length as the last job.
Drill points and steel grades
Type 17 drill points are common on roofing screws for piercing thin to medium steel. Thicker purlins or unusual coatings may need specific point geometry — check the fastener supplier chart against your purlin specification.
Stainless fasteners are used at specific exposure points or with dissimilar metals — not as a default on every COLORBOND® sheet because cost and galling differ. Where coastal or chemical exposure demands upgrade, specify consistently across the roof.
Washer and seal integrity
EPDM or bonded washers must:
- Sit flat on the sheet rib — not on an angle across two ribs
- Not over-torque — crushing deforms the seal and cracks paint
- Stay compatible with COLORBOND® — avoid non-approved seal compounds on exposed areas
Leaks at fasteners are almost always install torque or washer placement — but wrong screw geometry causes chronic rework on thousands of fixings.
Colour matching on architectural roofs
Visible commercial roofs — schools, retail, street-front warehouses — need colour-headed screws matching COLORBOND® sheet. Mismatched heads read as polka dots from ground level and signal poor project control.
Order matched fasteners with the sheet batch on the pack lot. PREZO colour-matches standard COLORBOND® colours on screw heads and rivets where available.
ZINCALUME® or internal plant roofs may accept standard metallic fasteners — confirm with the client before visible rows go up wrong.
Stitch screws and flashings
Flashings, ridge caps and apron joints use stitching screws at closer centres than field screws. Specifications differ for:
- Ridge and hip cappings
- Barge boards subject to wind suction
- Penetration surrounds and plant platforms
Under-spec stitch spacing is a common wind damage vector on long commercial ridges in exposed Victoria.
Rivets and ancillary fixings
Some profiles and accessories use blind rivets or specialty clips. Match material to avoid galvanic corrosion with aluminium flashings or stainless rainwater. HB Fuller and other PREZO partner ranges include compatible sealants — pair with mechanical fixings, not instead of them.
Quantity and spares
Commercial take-offs should include:
- Field screws at specified centres plus realistic waste (drops, mis-drives, repairs)
- Stitch screws per flashing metre from manufacturer tables
- A spare carton sealed for owner maintenance — clients appreciate this on handover
Running out of screws mid-lift delays the crane day — stage fastener cartons with the sheet delivery.
Warranty and inspection
BlueScope warranties for COLORBOND® may require:
- Approved fastener types
- Install per roofing manufacturer's manual
- No field cutting that exposes bare steel without treatment
Keep fastener packaging labels on file — batch traceability matters on warranty claims.
